Innovations are critical for technology progress and wealth creation. Innovations in
manufacturing is not only imperative for competition but also for the long term viability of the business. Following an introduction on the changing scenes in global manufacturing, a summary on innovation theories and recent developments in open innovation will be presented.
The basic issues of critical thinking and the implications to innovative design and
manufacturing will be fully addressed. Innovation is perceived as a key driver for achieving high value manufacturing which is national goal in the UK. The central theme of this presentation will be discussed under six main headings: process intensification, process substitution, interface between different disciplines, new philosophies, information and communication technology and new grand challenges. Numerous examples on process and product innovation will be given to support the proposition.
